state. four years ago, mr. obama won 18- to 29-year-olds nationwide by 66% to 32%. a margin so large, young people were credited with putting him over the top in several key states. >> are you registered to vote? >> woodruff: surveys suggest he's sure to capture the majority of the youngest voter block again. but after four years of watching the president grapple with the realities of governing, they're not expected to give him another two-to-one win. 18-year-old freshman noel fisher says getting his peers to vote for president obama in 2012 is crucial. >> i would say is the biggest the largest split between ideology between the republican candidate and the democratic candidate the republicans right now are trending extreme conservative and it's just i don't think we have room for any of those extremes in our nation >> woodruff: but for all the enthusiasm of these obama volunteers, national surveys of young voters show a more complex picture. john della volpe is director of polling for harvard's institute of politics. >> it's almost night and day judy. you know whereas young people f

% in the less than four years president obama's been in office. what's the president doing about all that? well, he's, of course, campaigning out there all over the country. earlier today he stopped by kent state university in ohio, a place he visited back in 2008. let's take a walk down memory lane and see what he said. >> when bill clinton was president the average family income went up $7500. $7500. since george bush has been president, it's gone down $2,000. think about that. that's a $9500 swing. $9500. that's money out of your pocket. that's money going out of this country because we're borrowing it from china to send to saudi arabia to buy oil. that's what's added $4 trillion to our deficit. i mean, think about that. so we've created a mountain of debt for the next generation that they're going to have to pay off. >> sean: remember, under obama's watch household income has plummeted more than 8%, and he's added more debt than almost all of his predecessors combined. the president doesn't want to talk about his record because it's a record of failure. he's been disengaged from the moment

know president obama won four years ago here. if he can't do that, it's going to be very tough. these are states that romney has to flip back to the republican column if he wants to be elected president. >> jim, one of the things i noticed, too, that's different here, virginia's unemployment rate is much lower than the national average. you're talking about a national average of over more than 8%, virginia hovering in the 5% range or so. is his message of creating more jobs. is that really going to resonate in virginia? >> reporter: that is why i think, suzanne, we heard him talking about defense jobs. as he was putting it here a few moments ago, if the sequestration cuts happen -- you hear it here in the local media. while the economy is doing quite well, better than the national average. we heard the governor of this state, bob mcdonnell, tout this state's economy even at the republican convention, there are worries about defense cuts and what that would mean to the local economy. that's why i think you heard mitt romney tailoring his message to that particular issue. this is

president obama leading in io bvein ie mtiol colorado showing president obama leading in colorado by four points. nationally, president obama has seen his lead rebound in recent days. in the gallup daily tracking point, he initially got a six-point bounce out of the democratic convention. that lead evaporated in e ys n pdebaas tow au regained that six-point lead as if he just did the conventions all over again. with just 41 days left until the election, a snapshot of the race is very clear. in fact, we do these polls every day and it's almost starting to seem static at the presidential lel. thswstpolls that we do every day, pretty much the map always look like this. president obama leading in all of the swing states or at least leading in almost all of them. a standard caveat, of course, is that anything could change. but the longer that it goes on without changing, as long as it starts to look like is is calcifying as the state of the , ci nhare than half the country is already voting, half the swing states, already voting right now, while that is happening, if that part of the race is

will change dramatically because he'll ha the case we cannot afford four more years of barack obama. >> so that first debate is next wednesday in denver and did you know that early voting has for the first time today voting in a swing state, iowa. guess who's there john king. iowa city, iowa. john, are you seeing many early voters where you are? >> reporter: we have seen quite a few of them brooke. we had a camera here in iowa city and des moines earlier today. i wouldn't say it's gangbusters but modest lineseople saying pretty good loins and if you look at the stickers, the t-shirts a lot them are obama voters so you would say score the first day of early voting in iowa for the president and a cautionary note though. there's a strategic difference of the republicans and the democrats. democrats early investing in early voting and i talked to steve grubs saying the democrats won the early voting in 2010 and did quite well in the statewide races and legislative races and there's a difference of how important early voting is and votes in 2010 cast early. 35 states and t

-point margin for barack obama over the last three or four months. what that means in is the idea that obama could get 80% of the minority vote again is actually quite plausible based on these and other data. that looks like is what is going to get you. if he doesn't get 80, he will get 78 or 79. then the road at the bottom scioscia the breakout for college grad, some college or less or working class. the right and figures for likely voters, obama is doing a little bit better among white college graduate voters than he did in 2008, a to point margin, close to four points again. in the some college or less grip, he improved by 13 points which is somewhat better than he did in 2008 when he lost by 18. so remember what i was saying about the outlandishly large margins that mitt romney probably needs to be competitive among white working-class, the run up among white working-class voters. he's not anywhere close. that's the bottom line. this is true across many polls. you might see a margin of 20 points for mitt romney. you might see a margin of 22 points but nowhere do you see the ou

voters think mr. obama would do a better job. a cnn average of four recent ohio polls found 51% of voters support president obama. 44% favor mitt romney. one of romney's events wednesday was a manufacturing round table with business leaders and tv host micro. he's a man known for taking on tough jobs. in ohio he's overshadowed by the two other men that's even tougher. in washington i'm emily smith. >>> and for some more numbers, campaigned two on university poll says president obama was wide lead over mitt romney in the swing states of ohio, florida, and pennsylvania. in this case the president leads romney in ohio by ten points, leads in florida by nine points and in pennsylvania by 12 points. president before the united niegss today said the u.s./european union have entrusted themselves. the hall was not full as speech. the u.s. made demonstration voiced part of the speech. spokesman for the yieted nation un ambassador said it was unfortunate it was given the platform on yon kippur the holiest day in jud yichl. >>> magnitude 2.4 hit the area just after 3:30 p.m. the communities. no dama

used to be a sure thing. that changed four years ago with president obama the first hopeful to win that state in 40 years from the democrats. the latest polls give the president a slight edge. the real clear politics average has him leading governor romney by 4.5 points. most rates show the race in the margin of error. john roberts is live in springfield, virginia. john, governor romney today focused on the military and veterans in that area. >>reporter: he is working hard to put this back into the red column, talking to a group at the men legion post today. he told them about the potential effect of defense cuts in the looming sequestration saying it could result in the loss of 136,000 jobs here in virginia but it would profoundly affect military readiness and america's security. >> troubled and dangerous world we live in. the idea of cutting our military commit my by a trillion is unthinkable. and devastating. when i become president of the united states, we will stop it. i will not cut our commitment to our military. >>reporter: mitt romney said he does not know how president ob

shows how important virginia is. remember, president obama, then senator obama four years ago, he became the first democrat to win virginia in a presidential election since 1964. and alina, one part of mitt romney's strategy of winning the white house is taking back some of those states that traditionally voted republican like virginia, north carolina, and indiana. all states that the president won four years ago. >> and also ohio as we were talking about earlier, another important battleground. no republican has ever won the white house without winning ohio. >> reporter: exactly. >> also want to talk a little bit about something that romney likes to talk a lot about on the trail, which is his experience in business and how he's best to lead the economy back into recovery. but what's interesting is that he's actually losing his edge in at least three swing states on the economy, right? break down those numbers for us. >> reporter: this is fascinating. because what is the story behind those top-line polls? what's the numbers behind the numbers? a lot of it is the economy. a lot of polls n

real trouble so i'm afraid i have to go negative. (laughter) almighty father, almost four years ago president obama promised hope and change, but a lord and creator of the universe was this the change you wanted. the democrats left you off their convention platform and they want to force your servants to provide birth control to ther who of babylon. (laughter) obama punishes the job creators. just imagine how he'll treat the job creators. it's time to send obama a message-- maybe a river of blood or locusts, or losing ohio. (laughter) because barack obama isn't just wrong for the nation, he's wrong for creation. so, god, remember. on november 6-- a day which you are already in and will always be in for a time of eternity-- vote mitt romney. but bring photo i.d. because they're really cracking down. i'm stephen colbert and i pray this message. we'll be right back. (cheers and applause) (cheers and applause) >> stephen: welcome back, everybody, my guest tonight has written a new book which he describes as an existential detective story. he never tells you who did it because what's the

at "real clear politics" average and that gives you a better sense which has obama up about four. even if you take claims at face value, jon, if he is up by eight or 11 points in any of these polls, even if you were to take out the possibility of oversampling, which i don't think is happening and i could explain that later, necessarily, the, he is still up by so much even if they were oversampling he is still ahead. he is still ahead by four or five points. it will not benefit the republicans to pretend this is just all the pollsters helping obama. jon: well, judy, the one of the points republicans like to make that there was a 7 percentage point advantage among democratic voters who turned out in 2008. so if the pollsters use that model, if they weight all of their polls by democrats plus seven, those were the numbers, four years ago, they're saying it is not accurate because you're not going to get the same kind of democratic enthusiasm and democratic turnout in 2012 that you had in 2008 when barack obama was a new, unknown and very exciting contender. >> well that is the key questio

is happening to america in the last four years? apparently not. according to stephanie cutter, president obama's deputy campaign manager. >> what you find most often with women, they are not concerned about what happened in the last four years. >> kimberly: that is not what ann romney has been hearing. she spoke to greta last night. >> i will tell you four years ago, women that would speak to me had a lot of different concerns on their mind. this time around, it is nearly universal. that they are talking about jobs, the economy, their future. they are talking about debt, entitlement and everything that is so critical we make sure that we get ahold on this economy. >> kimberly: eric, wouldn't it seem to make a lot of sense that women would support the candidacy of mitt romney because hof his experience with the economy, with jobs, with trying to put food on the table, money in the bank? >> eric: again, i don't understand why people are voting for barack obama. women, single women are voting for barack obama overwhelmingly. look what is going on. we talked about it how many times? 500,000 fewer

for mitt romney. flee weeks ago both candidates were tied. obama has pulled four points ahead in the average. this isn't stopping diehard republicans who say the mainstream polls have a liberal bias. look at dickmorse.com. even rick perry is jumping on on the bandwagon. he's plugs unskewed.com. it compiles existing polling data and meshes it with the rasmussen poll and voila, big leads for romney. if you look at the unskewed.com average it has romney leading by eight points. >> it's going to be a landslide. >> rasmussen has obama ahead by 4. i think quickly there are things to separate two different things here with theories they put out there. one is the peer con sear see side. there's a plot by the liberal media to undermine romney. >> which would never happen. >> when fox news polls are showing it, i don't know. the other thing is there's seeds of an argument about systemic bias in polls. they're getting it wrong because there's too few democrats and republicans. i've heard that from democrats in polls in 2004, the other way. i heard it from republicans in 2008, when obama

last four years. i believe fact checking was created just for president obama. and i hope he does decide to spend his time correcting him because, quite honestly, most people know what an incumbent president has or has not done and what people want from a challenger is what are you going to do that will be better? >> well, alicia, is the strategy here that they want to have romney act as though the president lies so much and is full of falsehoods that if he does well in the debates, you really can't trust what he is saying, therefore, he's not doing well and to give romney a way of aggressively going after the president so he doesn't have to deal with specific policy things that can be taken apart by the president? >> yes and yes. he is dealing with the joe wilson school of debate, something we've seen from romney before. he tries to newt traize his own weaknesses by turning them against president obama. how much time it gives the obama campaign to prepare and to ji jut sue it. now obama can go into that debate ready to talk about the many lies and misspeaks of the romney campaign

by the end of my first term in office. >> dana: four years later, president obama in front of the yellow curtain that gutfeld hates and failed to deliver on the promise. does he take responsibility for not getting it done? >> as president, i take responsibility for everything to some degree. when i came in office, i inherted the biggest deficit in our history. over the last four years the deficit has gone up. but 90% of that is consequence of two wars that weren't paid for. prescription drug plan that wasn't paid for. worst economic disaster since depression. >> dana: he got four pinocchios. >> greg: nobody is buying this. this is presidential equivalent of the dog ate my homework or the president ate my dog who ate my homework. let it go. it's over. both parties are to blame about spending. but he tied a rocket to it. you know? that is a fat guy tweaking. >> do we even know what kind of dog? >> dana: i don't really -- >> eric: talk walking down the street -- >> greg: who speaks for eaten dog. >> bob: good example of -- do go ahead. >> eric: to give you an example. okay. so -- [over talk

? caller: no. you did not hear anything about the four americans being killed. obama is out campaigning and four americans were killed. host: the polls do not play into any part of your voting? do not accept them? caller: no. not after watching the news media. it is a disgrace to news media. host: up next is liz, college park, maryland. on our line for democrats. caller: i have a concern about recent events about -- comments regarding iran. ii said iraq had weapons of mass destruction. the secretary of defense said there were no weapons of mass destruction. now, 1 million of iraqis are dead, and i found we are being told the same lines that iran is on the verge of getting weapons of mass destruction and we should draw red lines and go to war with them. we have been down this road before. most of them are men, women and children. innocent people being killed for no reason at all. host: the leaders will be addressing united nations today. in the canoe the libyan president address in a speech today at 4:15 today on c-span and c-span.org. the libyan president will address the united nations

, the national survey, the race is tied. a dead heat 46% 46%. on this day four years ago, rasmussen had mr. obama up by 5 points over john mccain. 50%, 45%. a case could be made that mitt romney is doing better than john mccain did. but that might be misleading. the presidential race is going to come down to just a handful of states ohio and florida being the most important governor romney plus win in both places that's why today's polling news is causing controversy. talking points has said from the very beginning that the debates this year will be the deciding factor one week from tonight in denver, colorado, the president will meet the governor at :00 p.m. eastern time. no question and all the polls show this that most americans are not happy with president obama's leadership, especially on the economy. many of the folks don't trust mitt romney. however, if the governor can do what ronald reagan did in 1980, that is keep the incumbent president on the defense during the debates, then the polls will surely change. that's not an easy thing to do because the debate formats allow the candidates to

now run four battleground state polls of 11 states that were won by president obama in 2008 and they are up for grabs this time around. the last poll i believe had president obama 47, 45 in the battleground states. and the headline was isn't this great? well no context was provided. president obamas won those 11 states why over 54% to 45% last time around. >> bill: real quick, the carl rove board where is the race in ohio and florida in your opinion? >> well, toss-up in both states. >> bill: toss-up? it could go either way at this point in history? >> sure. >> bill: all right, mr. rove. we appreciate that next on the run down the governor of ohio john kasich will tell us what's going on in the buckeye state. dick morris and dennis miller warming up in the bullpen. both have provocative things to tell us upcoming. >> bill: continuing now with lead story. joining us from columbus the governor of ohio john kasich. before we get to that i'm bortd when people see you they will think i'm off because you obviously before you were the chief executive. >> 10 years. >> bill: that's ri

poll has mitt romney trailing president obama. the real clear politics national average show as four point lag. is romney letting this election slip right through his fingers? and importantly, why did he dial back his tax cut yesterday? if i don't know what romney's tax plan is, then i don't know how he's going to reach the middle class. in response to mirant last night and my it is pleasure with what mr. romney said, a key very senior mitt romney person calmed me today and says that mitt misspoke on dialing back tax cuts. and this senior person said mitt would like a mulligan and you know what, following beings, i'll give him a mulligan for now. but he has got to stay on message. and that importantly includes next wednesday's crucial debate. it could be his last chance. let's bring in our guest to comment on this. we have harry melver, steve moore oig and phil reducer. steve, i went off the rails and went off hfr-i was so angry at this wall street news story story. romney tempers tax plan, dialing back his tax code, suggesting that he's going to remove tax deductions from the middle

as so determined by the supreme court. >> and then this week romney mangles his message by saying obama didn't raise taxes in his first term but might in his second term. >> he's got one new idea. i admit he has one thing he did not do in his first four years he said he's going to do in the next four years which is raise taxes. >> which is it, mark? did he or didn't he or is he about to and hasn't yet? >> i will probably have a more charitable interpretation. >> your interpretation is the one we want. >> my sense is he was talking about raising marginal tax rates rather than raising any taxes. >> that's charitable, you're right. >> i will say a version of what i said before. he's not at the point where he can afford either to create distractions through loose rhetoric or to have a muddled message that doesn't give people a sense of where his heart is, as you said at the beginning. i'm just amazed that at this stage he's been a candidate for five years now that he's still just being that sloppy in a way that distracts from trying to drive a male message that could help him make up the ga

four years will be better for you than the first four years of an obama presidency? i think that the economy -- you can look at some macrostatistics and say things are better in some ways, but i think there are still people who have a lot of doubt about what's going to happen next. talk to anybody who is doing focus groups now and ask people in groups, what does the president plan to do in another four years? people don't know. and so mitt romney still has an opportunity, i think, to not only say -- >> you can say the same about mitt romney. >> you could, you could, but the president has got a record of four years that a lot of americans aren't happy with. he's not coming close to driving that message. he's still doing one event a day. still more likely to do a bad television interview that says nothing or creates a negative story or has some old video pop out. this is not left wing pundits or reporters who don't like mitt romney. this is what every republican i talk to is saying, scratching their head saying how can he continue to waste another day? i'm looking at my calend

relentlessly pounding president obama about the economy. he did it again today in ohio. >> i don't believe we can afford four more years like the past four years. >> maybe they haven't been happy the last four years. maybe they were disappointed with obama, but generally, they think we're on the right path. >> reporter: we found people at union square willing to discuss the merits of both candidates. >> he's been president for four years, and we haven't seen the turn around that he had promised. i'm not sure why the numbers aren't correlating to his performance? >> reporter: some republicans aren't buying the latest poll results. >> i don't think the election is over by any way shape or form. i think it's going to go down to the wire. >> reporter: next week's debate may be critical for romney. >> you have to get people at your side. the debate is key. >> reporter: corey cook says the bar is actually low for romney. >> he really needs to have a positive debate performance, where he appears presidential. that basic standard, does this guy look like he can be president is one he hasn't met over

four pinnochios from "the washington post" yesterday that 90% of the debt was run up under his predecessor. the david letterman interview that president obama gave last week on the debt and deficits was a veritable panoply of things that were at least misleading, and often just flat-out untrue. i think the president didn't get called on it. there were many more misleading statements in the 10 minute interview that president obama gave david letterman than anything in paul ryan's speech which as we saw led to the this explosion of fact-checking. bill: don't all politicians kind of take the truth and bend it a little bit, stretch it out for their own advantage? >> yes. that is an understatement. they do it all the time. everybody on all sides does it. and i think, you know, to a certain extent the romney campaign has to be a little careful not caught up in just being fact checkers, but at the same time calling the president out on his excesses. when he is say things about governor romney that aren't true. bill: rove takes it a step further because he writes about serial dishonest

. there was a question in there that asked, does obama, does romney care about the middle class, the rich, the poor, or everyone equally? most polls the that give four % the peopl osaget atte that mitt romney's policies favored the rich. by contrast, 59% said that obama's policies favored either everybody equally or the middle at 1inp. and i think the auto rescue is part of it. those bain ads are part of it. ken blackwell, the former republican secretary of state was on cnn today and he said it was just like '04. mm andryered up kerry in the recored. and he didn't say romney will never recover, but the implication was, romney's in a heap of trble. >> chris redfern, who is the chairman of the democratic party in ohio also with us tonight. chris. a very untenable position that governor kasich is being placed in, to go t antalk abouthe economy when it's all sitive r woers, mro's had nothing to do about it. what do you make of that? >> well, it's really important to realize that the downturn in the unemployment rates in ohio began long before john kasich took office. a close look at the record, we wi

fundamentally different paths for america. >> we can't afford four more years like the last four years. we've got to get this economy going again. >> greta: our journalist in the tank for president obama, one conservative group says absolutely, and it says more, that the mainstream media bias against mitt romney is out of control. now you're told to get your news somewhere else. how bad is the bias? fox news senior political analyst brit hume joins us. do you believe the mainstream media is biased? >> i think there is bias against the republican presidential candidate this year, and in every election i've covered as a journalist in washington. there's nothing new about the bias. i think it's more intense this year, exemplified in two ways. one is the extraordinary coverage given to any slip by mitt romney and the contrasting lack of such coverage by things that president obama says and does. the most conspicuous example is between romney's sharp, initial, probably poorly timed reaction to the event in egypt, libya, and subsequently elsewhere which dominated coverage for several days. in th

see this, i see it infrequently, i cry. i've been accused of being too emotional about politics. four years ago, john mccain stood up to a supporter who called then-senator obama an arab. here's his instantaneous, instinctive reaction. take a look. >> i have read about him and he's not -- he's a -- he's an arab. he's not -- >> no, ma'am. >> no? >> no, ma'am, no, ma'am. he's a decent, family man, citizen that i just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. that's what this campaign is all about. >> yeah, that's called honor. it's called honor. we're not seeing a lot of that. we're not seeing any of that. >> i haven't seen that on either side in this campaign. >> john mccain is a genuine guy. disagree with him, agree with him, whatever, it's called honor. the republican party used to believe in that. >> put it more crudely, there's some crap i won't eat. i'm not going to go along with what i see as is an ethnic campaign, that shouldn't be part of this campaign. i'm not going to go along with what you said. that instinctive no, no, is the greatest american spirit. i'm not

will be better. you might like president obama as a person, carol, but his policies haven't worked for the past four years. >> some republicans think that's not such a good strategy. they think that mitt romney should be just as hard on president obama as he has been in the past and the softening of issues only confuses republican voters, especially core voters. >> it's not his job to be outwardly partisan. he's supposed to be the states man. he's the one supposed to be talking about ideas. allow the super pacs to be do that, these outside groups tending hundreds of millions of dollars on television ads, let them be the ones who go out and attack barack obama, not mitt romney. so in many ways i think there's a level of frustration with the romney campaign from conservatives that it has not been as effective. the unemployment rate is over 8%. republicans think they should be winning and right now it's neck and neck if not a bit of a lead for president obama. >> of course the presidential debates will be critical for each candidate and the first is wednesday night, 7:00 eastern on cnn and cnn.com

or not president obama has delivered and it should be. the president has bn president for four years it should be partial lay referendum but in a presidential election, which is so important.voters going to have to -- want to look forward. only going to vote for somebody if that person has -- presents them a plan for what the next four years are going to look like. this polling stuff interesting. i think sometimes maybe some days we talk too much about it, but what the horse race is about the interesting question i think for the romney campaign today is are they going to do anything differently? i mean, they are clearly losing, this is slipping away from him. >> tara, leave it at that. are you going to do anything differently? >> listen, i think we have a great ground game. we are spreading the message far and wide. we are talking about recovery. we are talking about those five principles that will guide this romney/ryan administration relative to trade, economic, small business education and a reformed tax code. those are the things we are talking about. that's what america wants to hear, the

again. but the question is, who's plan is better for you? >> an obama win in republican-leaning virginia could deal romney a crushing blow. the president won here four years ago becoming the first democrat to do so since lyndon johnson. but in the state the military vote is not the only game in town. football fans are everywhere. so it's no surprise a reporter asked romney about the deal to end the dispute between the nfl and its referees. a question romney appeared to fumble. >> what do you think about the nfl refs? >> i sure hope they do. >> well, the refs will be back and they'll be back tonight playing in baltimore. but romney continues his push on national securityish shies at an event at a military college in pennsylvania tomorrow. that is a state where he is trailing the president according to recent polls. but it's one the campaign thinks it could put into play, wolf. >> why do they think that? the polls have been very lopsided in pennsylvania not just recently but for weeks and weeks. >> they've looked at that state for some time. they think it's something they could put in play

and weeks afterward, top members of the obama administration continued to tell a different story saying for days after it was a spontaneous protest that got out of hand. that attack killed four americans including our ambassador to libya, chris stevens and four days after they were told, intel knew there was a terrorist attack, this is what the administration sent our u.n. ambassador on the sunday shows to tell america. >> the best assessment we have today is that in fact this was not a preplanned, premeditated attack. that what happened initially was it was a spontaneous, reaction to what had just transpired in cairo. as a consequence of the video. our current assessment is that what happened in benghazi was in fact initially a spontaneous reaction to what transpired hours before in cairo, almost a copycat of the demonstrations against our facility in cairo, which were prompted of course by the video. what our assessment is as of the present is in fact what it began spontaneously in benghazi, as a reaction to what had transpired some hours earlier in cairo. megyn: joining me now, simon

out the front page headlines from four years ago and look at what was happening at this 0.4 years ago, where we were losing hundreds of thousands of jobs. in the month when president obama took office, we lost almost 800,000 jobs that month. there was talk of another depression at that time. whether we are talking about taxes or san antonio or anyplace, are we were we want to be? no. but are we better off than where we were? when we're talking about going into another depression and the banks collapsing and so on and so on? absolutely. there is no question in my mind. >> this question has become a part of his campaign. mayor castro makes the case that there have been 30 consecutive months of job growth. and when the president came into office, things were significantly worse now. would you like to take issue with this? >> right now, tragically, work- force participation is at the lowest rate it has been in 30 years. you mentioned john stuart been normally, you can get a barometer of where the country is by the late-night comics. >> i thought you said comics.
